E-commerce in France may suffer due to restrictions on new warehouses

E-commerce powerhouses like Amazon may soon find it difficult to grow in France.

Reuters Paris recently broke the news that France’s Environment Minister Barbara Pompili “[paused] the development of warehouses used by online businesses such as Amazon.”

Although the restriction was not aimed at Amazon specifically, the giant online retailer is likely most severely impacted by this, as they had plans to open new warehouses throughout the country “in the short and medium term.” Instead, the restriction was implemented to help small retail businesses remain competitive after suffering greatly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s yet to be seen whether this limiting of new warehouses will have drastic implications for all e-commerce and/or pure-play brands in France. But the latest CCINSIGHT suggests nothing but growth in the vertical. Since late June, e-commerce revenue has been booming in France and shows no signs of stopping.

Perhaps now is the time for smaller, niche e-tailers to take advantage of this wave while Amazon is on its heels.
